Teen Sentenced for MS Blaster Virus
Posted on January 29, 2005
U.S. District Judge Marsha Pechman sentenced a teenager to 18 months in prison for propagating the MS Blaster computer virus that infected nearly 50,000 computers in 2003.
19-year-old Jeffrey Lee Parson a high school student in Hopkins, Minn., admitted last August to releasing the worm to in hopes of creating the damage it ultimately did.
Judge Pechman gave the teen a lighter sentence than expected, attributing the lesser penalty on Parson's immaturity and lack of parental supervision.
MS Blaster, also known as the LovSan virus, exploited a weakness in Microsoft's Windows XP and Windows 2000 operating system software. Once infected, computers were then programmed to attack the Microsoft website.
