Google CEO Eric Schmidt yesterday confirmed the company’s plans to launch an online ad exchange.

The exchange was first suggested by David Rosenblatt, president of display advertising for Google, at the IAB conference in the US in February.

Speaking in the closing session at yesterday’s Google Zeitgeist conference, Schmidt defended why YouTube ads are sold on a cost-per-impression basis rather than via an exchange. “We’re trying new ad models on YouTube, looking for a combination of formats,” he said.

When pressed on the exchange model, Schmidt replied, “I’m trying to avoid pre-announcing a product, if you get my drift.”

Although DoubleClick, which Google acquired for $3.1bn in April 2007, already runs DoubleClick Exchange, the Google launch will work to extend the AdSense market. In February, Rosenblatt said the exchange would be neutral and support all ad formats.
