The Queen is to have her annual Commonwealth Day Observance service broadcast “twittered” live from Westminster Abbey next Monday.

The Supreme Governor of the Church of England, who forswore mobile telephones until 2001 when her son Prince Andrew gave her one, will not key in the updates in person.

One of Westminster Abbey’s stewards or other staff will be assigned to that detail.

This year’s service, which traditionally includes prayers and readings by members of other faiths, marks the 60th anniversary of the foundational Commonwealth Declaration, signed in London in 1949.

Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni, the current chair of the Commonwealth, will be the main guest of honour.

Advance tweets, however, give a clue as to what is to come.

“Performances by South African tenor Njabulo Madlala and a steel band from Trinidad and Tobago,” promises Wabbey@Twitter. “Follow live updates on the day from web. Her Majesty The Queen and HRH The Duke of Edinburgh will attend the annual Observance for Commonwealth Day at the Abbey on Monday 9th March.”

The Abbey, which has a respectable 500-plus followers, continued in a more recent update: “We’ve been tweeting for a couple of weeks and will continue to do so after the Observance; there’s much to say about the Abbey.”

Stephen Fry, Yoko Ono and Jonathon Ross are among the celebrities who tweet regularly.
